Interpretation of the Bible / Ephesians 5:22-23

Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.

It is important to remember that the submission of wives is a voluntary act, not a forced imposition by their husbands. The verse goes on to say that wives should submit “as you do to the Lord.” That is, wives’ submission to their husbands should be a reflection of their submission and love for God. By submitting to their husbands, wives not only honor the divine design of marriage, but also express their love and respect for God.

It is important to note that the text does not deny the equality of men and women, but rather establishes different but complementary roles. Just as each member of the body has an important function, men and women have different roles, but both are valuable to God.

In today’s society, many people consider this verse outdated and patriarchal, but this may be the result of a misunderstanding of the true meaning of this verse. Instead of viewing marriage as a gender competition, we must remember that it is a team with different roles and responsibilities. A woman is equally important and valuable in the eyes of God, and her husband is to treat her with love and respect, just as Christ loves and respects the church.

This verse also reminds us of the importance of relationships and connections in our society. As the Body of Christ, we need leadership, as well as care and love. God calls us to play our part and work together in building His Kingdom.
