Interpretation of the Bible / John 3:21

But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.

The Gospel of John records the words of Jesus when He spoke to Nicodemus, a Pharisee who wanted to know more about Jesus’ miracles and teachings. On this occasion, Jesus spoke about the purpose of His coming to earth – to save all who believe in Him – and how we can achieve this salvation.

One who practices the truth

This verse speaks of “one who practices the truth,” which means more than just believing the truth. A true disciple not only believes, but also commits to living the truth daily. There can be no true faith without sincere and consistent works. Thus, faith and works go hand in hand.

Truth refers to the Word of God, which is the very foundation of our faith. Practicing the truth means actively applying biblical principles in our lives and changing the way we think and act to align with God’s will.

Coming to the light

This verse also speaks of “coming to the light.” The light here symbolizes God’s truth shining through our darkness and revealing what is hidden. Coming to the light involves an honest self-assessment and a voluntary disclosure of our actions and works to God’s truth. When our works are exposed to the truth, we are given the opportunity to correct what is wrong and move forward in the light.

Works are done in God

Finally, this verse says that our works are to be “done in God.” This means that our actions are to be in accordance with God’s will and to accomplish His purposes. Without a personal relationship with God, our works may be in vain. By seeking God in prayer and studying His Word, we can be sure that our works are being done to His glory.
