Interpretation of the Bible / Ephesians 5:28

In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

Ephesians 5:28 teaches us an important commandment for men regarding their wives. This comparison between loving your wife and loving yourself is not accidental, but rather reveals a fundamental truth: marriage is a union in which two become one flesh. Therefore, to love your wife is to love yourself, since they are both parts of one whole.

It is interesting to note in this regard that the Bible does not give a similar commandment to women. This does not mean that they should not love their husbands, but the comparison to their own flesh is not explicitly made in the biblical texts. Why is this? Some commentators note that in the culture of the time, men had a lot of freedom to despise their wives and treat them badly, so this commandment may have been a way to remind them of their marital responsibilities and obligations.
