Interpretation of the Bible / 1 Corinthians 7:2
1 Corinthians 7:2 speaks of the importance of faithfulness in marriage. The apostasy of the Corinthian church had led to several conflicts over marital issues. Apparently, some felt it was necessary to have multiple sexual partners, which led to unrepentant extramarital affairs.
In this context, the apostle Paul uses this verse to encourage the Corinthians to have their own partner and to be faithful to that partner, for this is more pleasing to the Lord.
The importance of marriage
Marriage is important in a person’s life. God established marriage as a sacred covenant between a man and a woman for life. Sexual relations outside of marriage are against God’s will. Not only are they sinful, but they can cause serious emotional and spiritual harm to everyone involved, including family members.
Faithfulness in marriage
Faithfulness in marriage is crucial. As followers of Christ, we are to be faithful to our spouses and avoid any temptations that might lead us away from that faithfulness. God wants us to have a loving, long-term relationship with our partner that resists carnal urges. Infidelity not only hurts our partner, it offends God and our conscience.
