Interpretation of the Bible / Romans 8:26

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.

Paul’s letter to the Romans 8 presents a number of fundamental truths about the relationship between God and His children and how the Holy Spirit helps them in their weaknesses. Verse 26 of this chapter calls us to consider how the Spirit helps us when we do not know what to ask for or how to pray properly.

Human weakness and the need for Divine help

First of all, it is important to note that Paul speaks of “our weakness.” In other words, he recognizes the limitations and fragility of human existence and that at times our difficulties may seem insurmountable and we do not know how to cope with them.

The importance of prayer and the Intercession of the Holy Spirit

In this context, Paul teaches us that the Holy Spirit is divine help. He says that the Spirit intercedes for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. That is, when we do not know what to ask for or how to pray properly, the Holy Spirit guides us and intercedes for us before the Father in heaven. This is a powerful and comforting truth.

We may be assured that the Holy Spirit helps and guides us in the midst of our weaknesses, and that our prayers are made more effective by His presence and help.
