Interpretation of the Bible / Romans 3:23-24
Romans 3:23-24 captures the reality of our situation as humans in relation to God very well: we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Sin is a reality not only in the lives of those who do not know God, but also in the lives of believers. No one is perfect, and we all have flaws and weaknesses that separate us from God’s will.
The consequences of sin
Not only does sin separate us from God, but it also has serious consequences in our lives. The Bible is clear that sin brings death, both physical and spiritual.
Physical death means the permanent separation of body and soul, while spiritual death means separation from God and the inability to enjoy eternal life in His presence.
God’s plan for our salvation
Despite our sinful state, there is good news for all of us. God has not abandoned us in this situation of spiritual poverty, but has created a plan for our salvation. The Bible teaches that God sent His Son Jesus Christ into the world to die for our sins and to rise again on the third day, so that whoever believes in Him may have eternal life.
Are justified freely
When a passage says that we are freely justified by His grace, it means that we cannot earn salvation by our own works or merits. Rather, it is a gift from God that we must receive through faith in Christ Jesus. God’s grace refers to His love and mercy for us despite our sins.
Furthermore, the atonement that is in Christ Jesus is the work He accomplished on the cross by sacrificing Himself for our sins. He became our ransom by paying the price we could not pay. Because of His death and resurrection, we have access to God’s grace and justification.
