Interpretation of the Bible / Ecclesiastes 4:4

And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

Ecclesiastes 4:4 invites us to reflect on our feelings toward others and to realize that envy leads only to futility and anguish of spirit. We must learn to value our own abilities and achievements without constantly comparing ourselves to others.

Moreover, this verse calls upon us to show compassion to those around us and to avoid envying their successes and accomplishments. We ought to rejoice in the happiness and achievements of others and support one another in our endeavors and dreams. In doing so, we can build a society that is more just, harmonious, and equitable.

It highlights the realization that human activity and skill are often driven by the desire to attain a higher status than others. Solomon observed that the wheel of life turns on envy and a spirit of rivalry. The desire for a better home or finer clothing—all of this seemed so hollow and unworthy of a human being created in the image and likeness of God.
