Interpretation of the Bible / Genesis 3:22-23

And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.

Genesis 3:22-23 are quite interesting verses. To understand their meaning, we must first understand the context. These verses take place after Adam and Eve disobeyed God and ate the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. This disobedience resulted in original sin and Adam and Eve's expulsion from the Garden of Eden.

Meaning of the verses

These verses can be interpreted in various ways, but the most common explanation is that God does not desire for humans to live forever in their fallen state. If they had eaten from the tree of life, they would have lived forever in a world full of sin and pain.

The phrase "as one of us" is also interesting. Some believe God is speaking to angels, but others believe it is a reference to the Trinity as a whole.

This passage teaches us several important lessons. First, it shows us the gravity of sin and the need to take responsibility for our actions. Secondly, it shows that work is a Divine commandment and a way to restore man’s communion with God.
