Interpretation of the Bible / John 1:18

No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.

John 1:18 is a well-known and quoted verse in the Christian community because it speaks of the relationship between God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ. This passage allows us to understand how God reveals Himself through His Son, who is not only His offspring but also part of His divinity.

In the first part of the verse, John states that no one has ever seen God. While this may seem like a contradiction in the Bible, we must understand that God is a spiritual being and human limitations prevent us from perceiving Him physically. In fact, in Exodus 33:20, God tells Moses that no man can see His face and live. Thus, God presents Himself as an intangible and invisible being.

However, in the second part of the verse, John says that who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known. This refers to Jesus Christ, the second person of the Holy Trinity. Jesus is the incarnation of God, meaning He is God who became man. As Jesus himself explained in John 14:9, “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.” Thus, in Jesus we can know and experience the presence of God.

This verse teaches us that Jesus is the perfect image of God. If we want to know God and understand His character, we only need to look at Jesus. Throughout the Gospels, we can find many examples of Jesus showing us God’s will for our lives. For example, through His teachings, we can understand that loving our neighbors and treating them fairly are important commands to draw closer to God.

This verse also gives us an opportunity to reflect on how we perceive God. Many of us may have an incorrect or limited view of who God is. Therefore, we must be open to learning more about Him through prayer and the study of the Word.
