Interpretation of the Bible / John 16:7

But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

In the Bible verse John 16:7, when we read it, we may find it strange and even alarming that Jesus states that His departure is for our benefit.

The coming of the Comforter

However, as with many other passages in the Bible, the key to understanding this message is in the context. The “departure” Jesus speaks of is His ascension to heaven after His death. And after His departure will come the coming of the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, who will be sent to His followers in His place.

The work of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is considered one of the three persons of the Trinity, along with God the Father and God the Son. After Jesus’ departure, the Holy Spirit becomes His representative and Comforter on earth, guiding believers into truth and helping them live godly lives.

The importance of Jesus' death and resurrection

Jesus' going to heaven was ultimately for the glory and welfare of His followers, for through His death and resurrection He provides atonement for the sins of mankind and the promise of eternal life in His Heavenly Kingdom.
