Interpretation of the Bible / Romans 12:14

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.

Romans 12:14 is an expression of the command to love our neighbor that is found throughout Scripture. Here, the Apostle Paul encourages Christians to bless those who persecute them rather than curse them. In other words, Paul is saying that we are to return good for the evil we receive.

Bless those who persecute us

The command to bless those who persecute us may seem strange at first. How can we bless someone who hurts us?

The answer is that we can bless those who persecute us by doing good for them rather than returning evil for evil. We can show love to those who hate us or mistreat us by praying for them and looking for ways to help them.

Don’t curse

The second part of verse 14 tells us not to curse those who persecute us. This means that we should not wish harm on our enemies or speak ill of them. Instead, we should pray for them and seek ways of reconciliation and peace.
