Interpretation of the Bible / James 1:26

Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.

In James 1:26 we are warned about the power and impact of our words. The apostle James tells us that if someone thinks they are religious but does not control their tongue, their religion is empty and in vain. By this he means that religion cannot be something external, something we do only in the temple or on a certain day, but it must be present in all our actions and all our words.

What does it mean to “bridle your tongue”?

James says that those who consider themselves religious must control what they say and how they say it. This means not only avoiding lying, but also avoiding words that could hurt others. When we do not control our lips, we risk hurting others and showing a lack of respect and love for them.
