Interpretation of the Bible / Psalm 112:1

Praise the Lord. Blessed are those who fear the Lord, who find great delight in his commands.

Psalm 112:1 describes the person who fears the Lord as blessed, but what does the fear of God really mean and why is it so important to us?

Let’s start by understanding that the fear of the Lord is not a paralyzing fear or trembling before His presence, but a deep respect and reverence for Him. It is the awareness of His power and His greatness that leads us to this. Recognizing our human limitations and always seeking His mercy and guidance.

Delighting in God’s commandments

The second aspect mentioned in this verse is delighting in God’s commandments. What does this mean? It is not just about obeying them, but finding joy and satisfaction in them.

For example, when we love someone, we seek to know their preferences and tastes in order to please them, and the same thing happens when we love God. We do what He asks of us with joy because we believe that His commands are beneficial to us and bring us closer to Him.

The blessing of obedience

Why is a person who fears the Lord and delights in His commandments called blessed? The answer is simple: because obedience brings blessing.

When we follow God’s ways, we honor His will, and He rewards us with His love, favor, and protection. Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us that God has plans for our well-being, and they are fulfilled when we keep His commandments and trust Him with all our hearts.
