Interpretation of the Bible / 1 John 3:17
In 1 John 3:17 we see a call to compassion and help for those in need. The Apostle John tells us that if we have material possessions and we see a brother or sister in need, but we close our hearts to them, we cannot say that God’s love dwells in us. This message is a call to love and compassion for others, especially those who are less fortunate than us.
Why is it important to help those in need?
The Bible teaches us that our material possessions and the wealth we possess are not for our own benefit alone, but are to be shared with others.
Jesus tells us in Luke 12:33, “Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.” This verse shows us the importance of helping those in need.
Moreover, helping those in need is not only important because of the religious mandate, but also has a positive impact on our lives and our communities. By helping the less fortunate, we build a more just and equal society. We also develop our own empathy and compassion, as well as leadership and teamwork skills.
