Interpretation of the Bible / 1 John 3:4

Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.

1 John 3:4 establishes a fundamental truth of the Christian faith: sin is the violation of God's law. God's Word tells us that every person is a sinner and therefore against God's law. But what is the law and how does it relate to sin?

The Law in the Bible

The term "Law" refers to the laws and rules laid down in God's Word. In the Bible, the Law is divided into two parts: the moral law and the ceremonial law.

The moral law is the set of laws that establish the moral duty of Christians, such as the Ten Commandments, which help us distinguish between good and evil.

The ceremonial law is the set of laws that show how believers should worship God, such as the laws of circumcision, sacrifice, and holy days. This law was fulfilled in Jesus.

Sin in the Bible

Sin is rebellion against the will of God, breaking His commandments. The Bible tells us that everyone has sinned and that this sin leads to death. No one is righteous before God. Therefore, God's Law shows the extent of our disobedience. When we commit sin, we disobey God's laws and, in essence, reject God and His will.
