Interpretation of the Bible / Proverbs 18:12
Proverbs 18:12 speaks of two different attitudes toward trials and achievements. First, we are told that before the fall, the heart of man becomes proud, that is, it becomes filled with arrogance and conceit.
When things go well, we tend to believe that it is because of our skill or intelligence, and we begin to rely on our own strength to succeed. However, this verse reminds us that there is another way, and that the true source of honor is humility. Humility allows us to realize that everything we have is not due to us, but comes from God.
Thoughts on pride and humility
Pride is one of the most destructive sins, because it causes us to believe that we are superior to others and to act selfishly. When we are filled with pride, we have difficulty accepting help or advice from others, and we become withdrawn and defensive.
On the other hand, humility allows us to see things clearly, without the layer of egocentrism that pride envelops us with. Humility makes us more open, more compassionate, and more willing to accept constructive criticism.
