Interpretation of the Bible / Ezekiel 34:26

I will make them and the places surrounding my hill a blessing. I will send down showers in season; there will be showers of blessing.

Ezekiel 34:26 reminds us of the care and protection God provides His people. In this verse, God demonstrates His willingness to bless the land and its inhabitants. The promise that God will "send rain in its season" is especially important in an agrarian society, where rain is essential for life and sustenance.

What does "God will bless them and the area around my hill" mean?

To understand this promise, we must understand its context. Ezekiel was called to prophesy to the Israelites during a time of crisis—the Babylonian captivity. Many Israelites were exiled from the Promised Land to Babylon, and those who remained found themselves in dire straits. Amid this chaos, God sent Ezekiel to call the Israelites to repentance and faithfulness to God.

In chapter 34, Ezekiel condemns the leaders of Israel for their negligence in caring for God's sheep. Instead, God promises to care for His faithful people, guiding them to green pastures and quiet waters and protecting them from wolves and disease.

Thus, in a general sense, the phrase "I will bless them and the place around My hill" means that God promises His people protection, care, and provision. This applies not only to the people of Israel in Ezekiel's time but to all believers who strive to live faithfully to God's will.

What are "showers of blessing"?

Verse 26 also speaks of "showers of blessing." In ancient Palestine, rain was essential for crop growth and the survival of animals. Therefore, rain was considered a blessing from God. In this verse, God promises to send "showers of blessing," meaning that these rains will be a blessing for God's people and for the land.

In Jewish culture, "showers of blessing" can also refer to spiritual blessing. This includes God's grace and mercy toward His people. In this sense, showers of blessing are comparable to physical rain in their importance for life and spiritual growth.
