Interpretation of the Bible / Psalm 31:19

How abundant are the good things that you have stored up for those who fear you, that you bestow in the sight of all, on those who take refuge in you.

The Bible is filled with references to God's love and kindness. It is a vivid example of God's goodness to those who fear Him and trust in Him. Psalm 31 is a psalm sung by David, a man who sought God his entire life and who, amid trials and tribulations, recognized God's goodness.

God's mercy to those who fear Him

Verse 19 speaks of God's goodness to those who fear Him. Fearing God doesn't mean literally fearing Him, but acknowledging His power and love. To those who recognize their complete dependence on God, the Lord reveals His goodness at all times. God is a loving Father who has a perfect plan for each of us.

In the book of the prophet Jeremiah, God promises us: "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11). This promise extends to all who fear God and trust in Him.

God's goodness to those who wait for Him

Those who wait for God are those who place their trust in Him. Waiting on the Lord means being confident that He will fulfill His promises. God is faithful and always keeps His word. Those who wait for Him will not be disappointed.

Psalm 27:14 says, "Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord." Sometimes it may seem like God doesn't hear our prayers, but He always acts on our behalf, even when we don't see it. Waiting on God allows us to trust in His goodness and know that He will always be on our side.

God's goodness in the eyes of the sons of men

Verse 19 also speaks of God's goodness toward humanity. This means that God's goodness and love should not be hidden but, rather, shared with others. As Christians, we must be witnesses to God's goodness in our lives and in the lives of others.

In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus teaches us, "In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven" (Matthew 5:16). We must live in a way that reflects God's love and goodness.
