Interpretation of the Bible / Luke 12:32

Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.

The verse is taken from Luke 12, where Jesus speaks to His disciples and the crowd about the dangers of hypocrisy, rivalry, and excessive concern for material things. Jesus warns them to be prepared for His coming and to trust in God's providence.

The meaning of the word "little flock"

The first part of the verse, "Do not be afraid, little flock," is an expression that has a double meaning in the biblical context. On the one hand, it refers to the disciples and believers who followed Jesus, who at that time were a relatively small group, persecuted by the religious and political authorities of the time. Jesus speaks tenderly to them and assures them that they should not be afraid, for the Father will protect them and give them the Kingdom of Heaven.

On the other hand, the expression "little flock" evokes the image of shepherds caring for their sheep - weak and vulnerable animals in the face of the dangers of the world. Jesus is presented as the Good Shepherd who guides and protects His flock and is willing to give His life for them.

The promise of the Kingdom of God

The second part of the verse, “for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom,” is a divine promise that Jesus makes to His followers. The kingdom of God is the central theme of His message, and it implies God’s rule over the world, in which justice, peace, and the fullness of life that we all long for will reign.

Jesus assures them that this promise will be fulfilled not because of the disciples’ merits, but because the Father has chosen to bestow this gift upon them. This is an expression of divine grace and generosity, offering us salvation and eternal life as a free gift that we cannot earn or buy.
