Interpretation of the Bible / Ephesians 5:31
Marriage is one of the oldest and most sacred institutions of mankind. The Bible teaches us that marriage is a spiritual, emotional, and physical union between a man and a woman. Ephesians 5:31 reminds us of the importance of the marriage union and teaches us that this union is, in some ways, stronger than any other type of human relationship.
The importance of marriage
Marriage is an institution established by God from the very beginning of creation. In the book of Genesis, God created Adam and then from Adam’s rib, He created Eve to be his companion and helpmate. Since then, marriage has been considered a sacred union blessed by God.
Ephesians 5:31 reminds us that marriage is a unique and special union in which a man leaves his father and mother to join his wife. This verse teaches us that marriage is not a temporary or casual union, but a permanent and sacred union.
The physical and spiritual union of marriage
Marriage is not only a physical union between a man and a woman, but also a spiritual and emotional union. As believers, we know that marriage is a sacred promise and blessing from God. In marriage, a husband and wife become one flesh; this union goes beyond the physical.
When two people marry, they unite not only their bodies, but their souls. The marriage union is an example of the fellowship that should exist between us and God. Marriage is a reflection of the same union that exists between Jesus Christ and the church. In other words, marriage is a tangible expression of God's unconditional love for us.
