Interpretation of the Bible / 2 Corinthians 4:17

For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.

The passage in 2 Corinthians 4:17 is a reflection on the suffering we experience in life as a result of original sin. In this context, the apostle Paul compares the temporary hardships we may experience in this world with the eternal glory that awaits those who believe in Christ Jesus.

Momentary tribulation

In this passage, Paul reminds us that even though we may experience difficult times and trials in this life, they are temporary and will not last forever. The word “tribulation” comes from the Latin word “tribulum,” which means “an instrument for breaking.”

This gives us an idea of what tribulation is: it is something that shapes and transforms us, like the action of a millstone on a grain of wheat. Tribulations help us grow in maturity and allow us to develop greater trust in God.

The weight of glory

The Apostle Paul shows us how the suffering we experience in this life produces a “far more exceeding glory” that is far more valuable. Suffering helps us see life from an eternal perspective and gives us a greater ability to appreciate spiritual blessings that are not subject to the vicissitudes of this life.
