Interpretation of the Bible / John 1:5

The Gospel of John, written by the Apostle John, is one of the four canonical Gospels of the New Testament. The author presents the word of God sent to humanity through the incarnation of Jesus. In fact, John begins his Gospel by stating that Jesus is the word of God.

John 1:5 presents one of the most important teachings of Christianity. In this verse, the author compares the light to Jesus and the darkness to the world. The message is clear: although the darkness tries to extinguish the light, the light always shines in them and will not be defeated by them.

Meaning of the Verse

In this verse, the Apostle John speaks of good and evil. The light represents the good that Jesus embodies, and the darkness represents evil and the lack of knowledge of God. Light is a common figure in the Bible, symbolizing truth, life, salvation, and goodness. The Apostle Paul wrote in his letter to the Ephesians: “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light” (Ephesians 5:8).
