Interpretation of the Bible / Genesis 3:7

Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

Genesis 3:7 is part of the story of the Fall of man, when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit. In this verse, we see that after disobeying God, their eyes were opened and they realized their nakedness.

The meaning of nakedness

Nudity in the Bible has a negative connotation. In this context, nakedness can be understood to symbolize shame and sin. The fact that Adam and Eve hid from God after hearing His voice (Genesis 3:8) shows that they were ashamed of their nakedness and their disobedience to God.

Throughout the Bible, we see nakedness mentioned in various contexts. The Old Testament says that nakedness was considered a curse and a disgrace (Isaiah 47:3; Amos 2:16). In the New Testament, nakedness is mentioned in connection with love and compassion for others (Matthew 25:36; James 2:15-16).

Using fig leaves

In Genesis 3:7, we see Adam and Eve sewing fig leaves together to cover their nakedness. This action symbolizes their attempt to cover their shame and conceal their sin. However, it is important to note that their efforts to cover their nakedness were not enough to hide their sin from God.

Other passages in the Bible mention the use of clothing to cover nakedness (Exodus 28:40-43; 1 Timothy 2:9-10). In this sense, we can understand the use of clothing as a form of protection from shame and sin.
