Interpretation of the Bible / Matthew 5:15-16
Matthew 5:15-16 is part of the famous Sermon on the Mount, which Jesus preached to His disciples and followers on a hill by the Sea of Galilee. In this sermon, Jesus teaches about right living and relationships with God and others.
In the religious context of that time, light was very important, especially in Judaism. Light was a symbol of God’s presence and guidance. Thus, the image of light became a powerful metaphor for illustrating God’s work in the world and the mission of Jesus’ disciples.
What does “your light” mean?
In these verses, Jesus talks about “your light.” Jesus is talking about the light that shines within each of us, the light that comes from God and allows us to see truth and love. This light can be compared to the wisdom, knowledge, and grace that God gives us when we follow His teachings.
Why should we shine before others?
Jesus tells us to shine before others so that they can see our good works. Why is this important? First, our good deeds are a tangible way to show our love for others. By doing good to others, we help make the world a better place.
Moreover, the light that shines within us comes from God, and when we share this light with others, we also glorify our Father in Heaven. By doing good deeds, we show that we follow the teachings of Jesus and love our neighbors as ourselves.
