Interpretation of the Bible / 2 Corinthians 7:1

The Apostle Paul wrote these words to the church in Corinth, a city filled with immorality and corruption. In this verse 2 Corinthians 7:1 he reminds them of the promise they have as believers and calls them to live holy lives.

God’s promises to believers

Paul tells us that we have “these promises.” What does that mean? As believers, we have many promises from God in the Scriptures. Promises of salvation, forgiveness, eternal life, His abiding presence, and much more. All of these promises are our inheritance as children of God.

Cleansing from all defilements

Paul calls us to “let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit.” What does that mean? The “defilements” the Apostle speaks of can be interpreted as anything that separates us from God and His will. This could be sin, bad habits, bad attitudes, impure thoughts, and many other things.

When Paul calls us to “purify ourselves,” he is talking about repentance and getting rid of everything that separates us from God. This is a call to purify both our behavior and our thoughts and emotions.

Perfecting holiness in the fear of God

Finally, Paul calls us to “perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.” Holiness is an ongoing process in our lives, and we must cultivate it every day. The fear of God is an attitude of humility, respect, and reverence toward Him. It is an awareness of who God is and our constant need for His grace and help.
