Interpretation of the Bible / Matthew 7:24

Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

This verse is part of the famous Sermon on the Mount, which Jesus delivered to the crowds that followed him. In it, Jesus taught about various aspects of the Christian life, such as prayer, fasting, caring for material things, and loving one’s neighbor.

In chapter 7, the Lord speaks of the need to be wise and prudent in our lives and not to be deceived by false prophets. Then, in verses 24–27, Jesus illustrates this teaching with a parable about building two houses, one on rock and one on sand.

The parable

In the parable, Jesus compares two builders, one wise and one foolish. They both wanted to build a house, but the wise man built his house on rock, while the foolish man built his house on sand. When the rain came, the floods came, and the winds came, the wise man’s house stood firm, but the foolish man’s house collapsed.

Jesus concludes the parable by saying that those who put His words into practice are like the wise man who was able to withstand the storms of life.
