Interpretation of the Bible / Luke 8:16

No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light.

In the Bible, light is a major symbol of God’s presence in our lives. The first book of the Bible, Genesis, mentions the creation of the sun and moon to illuminate the earth and separate light from darkness. In the New Testament, Jesus calls Himself the light of the world, again identifying light as a symbol of God’s presence. In Luke 8:16, Jesus continues to talk about light and its importance in our daily lives.

Meaning of the verse

This verse uses the image of a lit lamp. The light is not placed under a bed or under a basket, but is placed in a prominent place, on a lampstand, for all to see. The main idea of this verse is that light should be visible, not hidden.

For Christians, this means going out and sharing the gospel with others, but it also means being a positive example to those around us. As we continually seek God’s presence in our daily lives, His light will shine through us, and others will notice a difference in our attitude and behavior.
