Interpretation of the Bible / Proverbs 17:28

Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues.

The Bible teaches us that those who speak little are considered wise. This principle is reflected in Proverbs 17:28. This phrase may seem contradictory, but it actually teaches us the value of silence in wisdom.

The value of silence

In our modern culture, the word “wisdom” is closely associated with information and knowledge. However, the Bible teaches us that true wisdom goes beyond knowledge and information. Wisdom is the ability to discern between good and evil and to act accordingly.

In this sense, silence can be a powerful tool for developing this ability. When we are silent and listen, we open the door to reflection and deep analysis. In this way, we can better understand situations and make wiser decisions.

The danger of talking too much

On the other hand, those who talk too much risk becoming reckless and talkative. Because of this, we may say things we do not mean or things that do not fully reflect our true thoughts and feelings.

Moreover, by talking too much, we may miss the opportunity to listen to others and learn from their experiences and knowledge. The lack of humility that lies behind the need to constantly talk can hinder our development as individuals.
