Matthew 17:5 is one of the most important verses in the Bible that deals with the relationship between God and His Son, Jesus Christ. It tells of the transfiguration of Jesus and the words of God the Father during this scene.

The transfiguration of Jesus

The transfiguration of Jesus, described in the preceding verses, is a turning point in His life and ministry. Jesus took His disciples Peter, James, and John to the top of a high mountain, where He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became brilliantly white.

It is important to note that Jesus did not change His appearance, but His divine attributes were temporarily revealed to the disciples. This event confirmed that Jesus was the Messiah God had promised.

The voice of God

In this context, a cloud of light covered them, and God spoke from the cloud, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” These words are full of power and meaning.

First, God confirms that Jesus is His beloved Son. This title points to a unique relationship between Jesus and God, a connection that goes beyond earthly fatherhood. God not only calls Jesus His Son, but also expresses His love for Him.

Second, God confirms that He is pleased with Him. This statement seems to be addressed directly to Jesus, but it is also a message to the disciples and to us as followers of Christ. If God is pleased with Jesus, we can be sure that He is pleased with us if we follow His teachings.

Third, God calls us to listen to Jesus. This statement is a call to all who hear these words from God to listen to Jesus and His teachings. Jesus is the most important teacher we will ever know, and His words are worthy of our attention and reflection.
