Psalms 91:1-2 are famous verses in the Bible that offer a powerful and comforting promise to all who put their trust in God. These verses remind us that those who take refuge in the Most High will dwell under the shadow of the Almighty.

To dwell under the shelter of the Most High

In the Bible, the word "dwell" refers to a permanent place of residence. It's not a place we visit temporarily, but a place where we live as a family. In other words, if we want to abide under the shadow of the Most High, we need to constantly be in His presence. But what does “under the shelter of the Most High” mean?

In the original Hebrew, this phrase literally translates as “in the refuge of the Most High.” The idea here is that God is our refuge, our protection, and our place of safety amidst life's storms. We can always turn to Him for help and protection.

Dwelling in the shadow of the Almighty

The image of the "shadow of the Most High" possesses a special power. The shadow accompanies us everywhere, even on the hottest days. It is a symbol of protection and coolness.

In Jewish culture, the shadow was also a symbol of God's presence. The idea here is that those who dwell under the shadow of the Most High live in close connection with God. His presence envelops them like a shadow, bringing peace and security.

Our hope and fortress

First, the psalmist calls God his "Hope." This implies that in times of uncertainty, we can find confidence in God's promise to care for and protect us. We may not know what the future holds, but we can be confident that God has a plan for our lives and that He will be there, guiding and strengthening us.

He also describes God as his "fortress," creating an image of strength and protection. In times of danger or attack, the psalmist knows he can turn to God for refuge and protection. Importantly, the psalmist sees God not simply as salvation from the world, but as the One who gives him the strength and courage to face life's trials.

Another part of the verses calls us to trust in God. Faith is a common theme throughout Scripture, and it is especially important in this passage. We believe that God is with us, even when things seem difficult or incomprehensible. Faith doesn't mean we'll always have everything we want, but it does mean we can be confident that God is working for our good.
