The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,
because the Lord has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners.
Isaiah 61:1 is a verse of great significance in the Bible because it directly relates to Jesus's mission on earth. The prophet Isaiah foretold that the Spirit of the Lord would come upon the one who would be the Messiah, and that he would preach good news to the poor, heal the brokenhearted, proclaim liberty to the captives, and open the eyes of those in bondage.
