Interpretation of the Bible / 1 John 4:20

Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.

1 John 4:20 presents us with an important reflection on love, both for our fellow man and for God. The verse calls us to love our brothers and sisters, those we can see and know in our daily lives, so that we can love God, who is invisible and beyond our ability to perceive.

Love and lies

It is interesting to see how the verse contrasts love with lies. According to John, anyone who hates his brother but claims to love God is lying, and his claim is not true. That is, it is impossible to love God without loving our neighbor. In this sense, we are presented with a clear connection between loving our neighbor and loving God.

Christians' relationships with their community

As we apply this verse to our daily lives, we can reflect on our relationships with the people around us. John’s teachings call us to be loving toward those closest to us: our family, friends, co-workers, and everyone we come into contact with. In this sense, neighbor love can be understood as a tangible expression of our love for God.

Love is the foundation of faith

Love for one’s neighbor is one of the fundamental pillars of the Christian faith. Jesus Christ Himself confirmed this in the New Testament when He was asked which commandment of the law is the greatest: “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these” (Mark 12:29-31).

This passage tells us that love is the foundation of the Christian faith and is present in every aspect of our lives. It is our duty to love our brothers and sisters as ourselves and to bring this love into every aspect of our daily lives.
