Interpretation of the Bible / Hebrews 5:9

And, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.

Hebrews 5:9 is an important reminder of the perfection that Jesus experienced to accomplish His work of redemption on the cross, and how this, in turn, can benefit us as believers if we obey Him.

In this verse, the use of the term “perfect” is fundamental; it refers to the process of sanctification that Jesus underwent during His earthly life. It was this constant and stoic training that enabled Him to bear the burden of sin and die with the assurance that He had given everything for our salvation.

It is interesting to note that, as the verse mentions, this process of perfection was not easy or instantaneous. Through the temptations of the devil in the wilderness and the difficulties He faced in everyday life, Jesus was tested repeatedly to refine His character and strengthen His abilities for the work of ministry.

Another important point made in this verse is that Jesus became the “Author of eternal salvation.” That is, through His sacrifice, Jesus not only gave us salvation, but guaranteed it forever to all who obey Him. The fact that Jesus is the Author of our salvation assures us that He is not subject to human imperfections or change.

The Bible then tells us that “to all who obey Him,” Jesus becomes the being to whom we can trust our eternal salvation, allowing us to live prosperous and peaceful lives.
