Interpretation of the Bible / Matthew 19:21

Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

Matthew 19:21 is one of Jesus’ most famous teachings. Here, Jesus is addressing a rich young ruler who asks Him what he needs to do to gain eternal life. Jesus tells him to keep the commandments, but then makes a shocking statement.

Jesus tells the rich young ruler that if he really wants to be perfect, he must get rid of all his material possessions and follow Him. This may seem like a lot, but it’s important to remember that Jesus is not telling us all to do the same thing. Instead, He is addressing a man who was very attached to his possessions and giving him a personalized lesson on what he needs to do to follow Jesus.
