Interpretation of the Bible / Matthew 21:22

If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.

In Matthew 21:22 we find a wonderful promise from Jesus about the effectiveness of prayer in our daily lives.

These words of Jesus are an invitation to trust Him and the power of prayer. If we pray to God with faith and confidence in His answer, He will give us what we ask for. However, this promise does not mean that we can ask God for anything and expect Him to automatically give it to us. There are certain conditions that must be met in order for our prayers to be answered.

The importance of faith in prayer

The most important condition for our prayers to be answered is faith. Hebrews 11:6 says that “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” If we do not have faith in God and His ability to answer our prayers, our requests are unlikely to be answered.

Faith also means believing that God loves us and wants the best for us. When we pray in faith, we trust that God will give us what we ask for if it is best for us and His eternal purpose.

Ask according to God's will

In addition to faith, it is important to pray according to God's will. In 1 John 5:14 we read, "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us." When we ask God for anything, we must be willing to accept His answer, even if it does not match our expectations. If we pray for God's will to be done in our lives, we can be confident that He will answer in the best way.

The importance of persistence in prayer

Another important factor in prayer is persistence. Jesus taught us to pray continually and never give up. In Luke 18:1-8, Jesus told a parable about a widow who persistently sought justice from an unjust judge until he finally granted her request. This story highlights the importance of persistence in prayer and not becoming discouraged by the apparent lack of response from God.
