Interpretation of the Bible / Matthew 16:19
The Gospel of Matthew is an account of the ministry and teachings of Jesus, which focuses on establishing the Kingdom of God on earth. Matthew 16 emphasizes the importance of believing in Jesus as the Messiah and committing to follow Him. One of the highlighted verses in Matthew 16:19 concerns the “keys of the kingdom of heaven,” which Christ gives to Peter as the head of the Church.
The significance of the keys
In the Old Testament, keys symbolize power and authority in governing a country and enforcing the law. That is, keys represent access to control and leadership. Therefore, when Jesus announces to Peter that He will give him the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, He is giving him the authority to govern and spread the gospel on earth.
The significance of the key
The significance of the “keys of the Kingdom of Heaven” is that through them, Peter has the authority to act on earth in the name of God. Peter is commissioned to make disciples and preach the gospel of Jesus Christ in its fullness. This includes answering the questions and doubts of believers as well as those who do not yet know Christ.
Using the keys
The keys of the Kingdom of Heaven tell us about our authority as Christians to proclaim and preach the gospel of Christ. If we are true followers of Jesus Christ, then we also have access to the power and authority that this key gives us. But it is not just about preaching; it also means that whatever we bind or loose on earth will be bound or loosed in heaven.
