Interpretation of the Bible / Psalm 34:13

Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from telling lies.

Psalm 34:13 calls for purity of speech—a recurring theme in the Bible, highlighting the importance of controlling our words and ensuring that what we say is always truthful, righteous, and edifying.

Why is it important to care for the tongue?

The tongue is a powerful tool that can be used for both good and evil. With our words, we can bless, comfort, encourage, and teach others, but we can also hurt, slander, and defame. Proverbs 18:21 reminds us that "the tongue has the power of life and death," and James 3:5-6 compares the tongue to a fire capable of kindling a raging flame.

Furthermore, our words reveal what is in our hearts. Jesus said in Matthew 12:34, "For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks." Therefore, if we want to live a righteous life that is pleasing to God, we need to control our words and always speak to the glory of God.
