Interpretation of the Bible / 1 Corinthians 7:3-4

The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife.

The verses in 1 Corinthians 7:3-4 tell us about the duty of a spouse to each other. These verses remind us of the importance of the commitment and responsibility we have in a marriage relationship. The expression “marital duty” indicates that this is our obligation to each other, and we cannot ignore it.

What does marital duty mean?

“Marital duty” is a term used to describe the obligation of spouses to have sexual relations with each other within the marriage by mutual consent. This obligation is a way to maintain intimacy and unity in a couple. It is important to note that this obligation does not hinder the respect, solidarity, and love that should exist in a healthy relationship.

Marital equality

It is important to note that this verse also teaches equality in marriage. Both husband and wife should respect each other’s bodies and not use sexual relations to manipulate or control their partner. Instead, they must be willing to compromise and meet each other's sexual needs to strengthen their marital relationship.
