Interpretation of the Bible / Romans 7:7
Romans 7:7 is an interesting verse from the Apostle Paul. His words teach us that the Law is not the same as sin; rather, the Law exposes our wrongdoing and helps us understand where we have gone wrong.
The only way to recognize the sinfulness of something is to have a moral frame of reference that allows us to determine what is wrong. The Law serves this function by setting clear boundaries between what is right and what is wrong.
Understanding sin through the Law
The Law is an important tool for those who strive to live righteous and sanctified lives. By understanding God’s standards and how we are to live, we can begin to examine ourselves and our actions.
Abelard of Chalon, a 12th-century French theologian, wrote, “The Law is a compass that points the way forward, but it is never enough to get us there.” That is, although the Law shows us the right path, we still need grace and faith in Christ to restore our relationship with God.
How does the Law help us understand envy?
Romans 7:7 focuses on the command not to envy. Why is this command important and how can we better understand it through the Law? Envy is an excessive desire for things, even if those things are good for us, but are not necessary or just.
The Law shows us that God has given us everything we need to live, and that our true wealth is found in our love for Him and for others. Therefore, envy is contrary to God’s will and plan for our lives and can lead us astray.
