Interpretation of the Bible / Psalm 86:5

Psalm 86 was written by King David, and in it the psalmist expresses his trust in God and his dependence on Him amid life's difficulties. In verse 5, David affirms that God is good and forgiving, meaning He is a God full of love and grace.

God's goodness is a quality frequently mentioned in the Bible. In the Book of Psalms, David speaks of God's goodness in several psalms. For example, in Psalm 145, David writes, "The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made" (Psalm 145:9). God's goodness is a reason to trust Him and seek His forgiveness when we make mistakes.

Divine forgiveness

Besides His goodness, verse 5 also emphasizes God's forgiving nature. When David affirms that God forgives, he acknowledges that forgiveness is part of His character. Moreover, forgiveness is an integral part of the relationship between God and people.

The Bible teaches that we are all sinners and in need of God's forgiveness. Romans 3:23 says, "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God". But the good news is that God offers forgiveness through faith in Jesus Christ. John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

The mercy of God

Finally, Psalm 86:5 emphasizes God's great mercy. Mercy is defined as compassion for those who suffer or make mistakes. God is a merciful God, willing to forgive those who turn to Him and trust in Him.

God's mercy is not something we deserve or can earn. It is a gift bestowed upon us by God's grace. Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.”
