Interpretation of the Bible / Proverbs 18:10

The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.

The Bible is full of references to God’s name and how He should be called upon in times of trouble. Proverbs 18:10 highlights this idea by presenting the name of the Lord as a “fortified tower” in which the righteous can flee for safety. But what exactly does this mean?

A fortified tower

In the Bible, a tower was considered a defensive structure used to protect against external attacks and enemies. The use of metaphor in this verse suggests that the name of the Lord can serve as a defense against the dangers we face in life.

Moreover, the adjective “fortified” emphasizes the safety and protection that the name of the Lord can provide. This safety is not temporary but can last forever, meaning that we humans can rely on God’s protection even in the most difficult of times.

The righteous

This verse also specifically refers to the “righteous” as someone who flees to the tower. This is because justice is a key element in the relationship between humanity and God. Those who seek to do God's will and follow His commandments are considered righteous in the Bible and are therefore granted divine protection.

Furthermore, the reference to "righteous" implies that God's protection is not available to everyone equally. If we do not seek justice, it may be more difficult for us to find security in the name of the Lord.
