Interpretation of the Bible / Luke 9:24

For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.

This verse from Luke 9:24 teaches us an important lesson that we, as followers of Jesus Christ, must remember. In this passage, Jesus warns us of the cost of following Him and that we must be willing to sacrifice our lives for His sake.

The first part of this verse says, “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it.” Here, Jesus is telling us that those who seek to protect and preserve their lives will ultimately lose them. In other words, this earthly life is temporary and we cannot hold on to it. While it is important to protect and value our lives, we should not become fixated on them and make decisions that are contrary to God’s principles just to protect our existence.

On the other hand, Jesus says, “but whoever loses their life for me will save it.” In this case, our Lord is teaching us that those who are willing to lose their lives for the sake of the gospel will be saved in heaven.

But what does it mean to “lose your life for Jesus Christ’s sake”? It means giving up your selfishness and self-righteousness to live and act in accordance with God’s commandments, even if it means going against social trends or putting your life at risk.
