SVG In Christ

Interpretation of the Bible / 1 John 3:2-3

Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.

The book of 1 John is a letter written by the apostle John to strengthen the faith and unity of believers. In this particular verse, John reminds us that even though we are children of God, we still do not know all that God has in store for us. However, the promise of being like Him when He appears gives us glorious hope.

A call to faith and patience

Throughout the Bible, we are reminded that God’s plan goes beyond what our eyes can see and our ears can hear. In 1 John 3:2-3, we are called to be patient as we wait for God to reveal His will.

Sometimes it may seem like life just doesn’t make sense, but if we remember that God has a perfect plan for us, we can be confident that if we continue to walk in faith, we will one day see His promises fulfilled.

The desire to be like Christ

This verse also reminds us of the promise of Christlikeness. As children of God, our destiny is to live with Him forever in eternity. This means that at some point we will be transformed and become a new creation, without the presence of sin in our lives. It is important to remember that this transformation is only possible through our love for and dependence on Jesus Christ.

Purification through Hope

So how does this hope in Christ purify us? The answer is found in the phrase “just as He is pure.” Jesus is the perfect model of purity and holiness, and by placing our hope in Him, we are encouraged to seek that same purity in our lives. This involves a process of continual renewal and transformation in which we leave behind our old habits and grow closer to the image of Christ.
