Interpretation of the Bible / Psalm 20:4

May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.

Psalm 20 is a prayer in which the psalmist asks God for help and protection in difficult times. In verse 4, the psalmist expresses confidence that God will fulfill His plans and grant the desires of his heart. This verse calls us to trust in God's goodness and His ability to grant us what we desire.

What does "according to the desires of your heart" mean?

Some interpret this verse simplistically, believing that God will grant us everything we desire, without exception. However, it is important to understand that Psalm 20 is not speaking about our selfish desires or capricious plans, but about our deepest and truest longings—those desires that are truly aimed at the happiness and well-being of ourselves and others.

Psalm 37:4 says, "Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart." This is the key to understanding the meaning of Psalm 20:4. If we seek God and trust in Him, our desires will be in line with God's will, and He will give us the best.
