Interpretation of the Bible / Ecclesiastes 5:15

Everyone comes naked from their mother’s womb, and as everyone comes, so they depart. They take nothing from their toil that they can carry in their hands.

The book of Ecclesiastes is known for its philosophical reflections on life. Verse 15 of chapter 5, which speaks of our mortality, does not shy away from this topic.

Our fleeting existence on earth

In this verse, the author reminds us that our presence in this world is fleeting and ephemeral. We all came into this world naked and defenseless, and we will leave it the same. Therefore, we must make the most of our time on earth, without hiding from ourselves the reality of our mortality.

Furthermore, the author reminds us that none of our possessions or achievements will follow us into the next world. Whatever wealth and property we acquire in life, it will all remain here on earth. Therefore, we must ask ourselves: What is the meaning of our lives? What will we leave behind in this world when we pass away?

A call to reflect on what's truly important

Throughout our lives, we tend to worry about trivial and fleeting things, losing sight of what's truly important. This verse reminds us of the importance of reflecting on our lives and our actions. Are we doing the right thing? Are we giving our best?

It calls us to reflect on what's truly important and to value those around us. Instead of worrying about our possessions or accumulated power, we should focus on our own happiness and the happiness of those around us.
