Interpretation of the Bible / Colossians 1:18

And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

Colossians 1:18 speaks of Jesus as the head of the church, which means that Christ is the leader and teacher of His church. This verse also reminds us that Jesus is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so He has primacy in everything.

Jesus as the head of the church

The image of Jesus as the head of the church reminds us that Christ is the leader of His church. He is the one who leads, guides, and protects His people. The church is the body of Christ, and as members of that body, we are to follow the teachings and example of Jesus in our daily lives.

Jesus is described as the head of the church in other parts of the New Testament as well. Ephesians 5:23 says, “For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.” Jesus is the head of the church because He is the one who saved His people. As the leader, He guides and protects us on the path to eternal life.

Jesus as the beginning and the firstfruits from the dead

This verse also says that Jesus is the beginning and the firstfruits from the dead. This means that Jesus was the first person to rise from the dead. His resurrection is the most important event in the Christian faith because it proves that through Him we have the hope of eternal life.

Moreover, Jesus’ resurrection is victory over sin and death. 1 Corinthians 15:22 says, “For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.” As the firstfruits from the dead, Jesus gives us the opportunity to find new life in Him, free from the bondage of sin and death.
