Interpretation of the Bible / Psalm 31:16

Let your face shine on your servant; save me in your unfailing love.

Psalm 31 was written by David during a time of great distress. The King of Israel was suffering persecution and oppression, and in these circumstances, he decided to write a psalm in which he cries out to God for help and protection. In this verse, David asks God to make His face shine upon him so that he can be saved by His mercy.

What does "Let your face shine" mean?

In Jewish culture, the expression "make your face shine" referred to the manifestation of God's presence. When God granted someone the radiance of His face, it signified His favor and blessing. David prays that God would show him His favor and protect him during his persecution.

What does "save me in your unfailing love" mean?

The psalmist asks for salvation not through his own merits or any good deeds. He acknowledges his need for God and his dependence on Him and cries out for His mercy. God's mercy is His kindness to those who do not deserve His grace but receive it by His grace. David asks for salvation not by his own strength, but because he knows that God is merciful and can save him.
