SVG In Christ

Interpretation of the Bible / 1 Corinthians 15:1-2

Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.

The gospel is the central message of the Christian faith. It is the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ. The apostle Paul, in his letter to the Corinthians, states that he preached the gospel to those he spoke to, and that they received it and abode in it. These verses challenge us to consider the significance of the gospel in our lives and our personal responsibility to persevere in it.

What is the gospel?

The term gospel means good news. In the Bible, it refers specifically to the message of salvation through Jesus Christ. The gospel teaches us that we are sinners and separated from God, but that by the grace of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, we can be saved and reconciled to Him.

Our personal responsibility

In the verses quoted, Paul emphasizes that his recipients received the gospel and abode in it. Perseverance is a personal responsibility in the Christian faith. Faith is not just a single act of belief, but an ongoing attitude of trust and obedience. As Christians, we must maintain our faith even in times of hardship and temptation.

How do we maintain the preached word?

One way to internalize the preached word is to study the Bible and meditate on its teachings. We can also listen to sermons and attend churches where the truth of the gospel is taught. Furthermore, we must apply what we learn in our daily lives and share the gospel with others to strengthen our faith and help others find salvation.

What does it mean to “believe in vain”?

The end of 1 Corinthians 15:2 speaks of “faith in vain.” This means believing the gospel without true faith or a full understanding of its meaning. Faith alone is not enough to save us. Therefore, we must not only maintain the preached word, but also believe it with sincerity and true faith.
