Interpretation of the Bible / 1 Timothy 5:3
First Timothy 5:3 calls us to honor true widows. But what does this expression mean? First of all, we must understand that the culture of that time was very different from our own. Women were forbidden from holding certain positions and inheriting property. Therefore, widows were one of the most vulnerable in society.
When we are asked to “honor” these women, we mean the importance of caring for them, providing for their material and spiritual needs, and treating them with respect and love. In the context of the church, believers must take on this responsibility so that widows do not fall into poverty and despair.
Why is it important to honor widows?
Honoring widows is a sign of love and justice. It is easy to overlook those who do not have power and influence in society, but God calls us to be responsible for those who need our help.
In addition, the Bible repeatedly mentions that God is the protector of widows and that He Himself cares for them. Psalm 68:5 says, “A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.” So when we honor widows, we are acting in harmony with the heart of God.
