Interpretation of the Bible / Luke 15:10

In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.

Luke 15:10 is part of the well-known parable of the Prodigal Son, in which a young man asks his father for his share of the inheritance that was to go to him when he dies, and then squanders the money in a dissolute life. Left penniless, he repents and returns home, where his father welcomes him with open arms and celebrates his return. It is in this context that Jesus speaks this verse.

Meaning of the verse

In this verse, Jesus tells us about the joy that the angels of God experience when a sinner repents and returns to the right path. Angels are described in the Bible as servants of God who worship and help people, and so their joy at the conversion of a sinner is an important indicator of the value and importance that God places on the salvation of our souls.

The role of repentance in the christian religion

Repentance is a key theme in the Christian religion, and in fact, the conversion and spiritual change that repentance entails is at the very heart of Jesus' message. For Christians, repentance is the first step toward renewed faith and reconciliation with God.
